Sweden’s First Female Swimming Gold Medallist Sarah Sjöström Joins Abu Dhabi Swimming Festival as 2017 Ambassador

The Abu Dhabi Swimming Festival by Daman’s ActiveLife is delighted to announce Sweden’s first female swimming gold medallist, Sarah Sjöström, as the 2017 international ambassador for the event on 11th March.

Sjöström won Olympic gold in the 100m butterfly setting a new world record of 55.48 seconds in Rio last year. The 23 year old swimmer also won the 2016 Olympic silver and bronze medals in the 200m and 100m freestyle, respectively.

Excited about the event, Sarah Sjöström said she hopes this year’s event can attract even more competitors. “I am thrilled to be the international ambassador for this established mass participation swimming event. It is great to see people of all ages in Abu Dhabi being encouraged to take part in a sport I love and I hope we will see over 1000 people at Emirates Palace on March 11.”

The popular community event, sponsored by Daman’s ActiveLife; an initiative by National Health Insurance Company – Daman that aims to mobilise the UAE community to lead a healthy, active lifestyle, offers family fun and challenges for all age groups and abilities with eight different races to choose from. Registration is now open at www.swimabudhabi.com and closes on Tuesday March 7th.

Sven Rohte, Daman’s Chief Commercial Officer, said that “We are delighted that Sarah Sjöström, a high calibre athlete, is joining us as this year’s Daman ambassador as part of our on-going efforts to promote a healthier lifestyle for all in the UAE. It is always a memorable event, which serves Daman’s key objective to motivate the entire community to take up regular exercise for the betterment of the collective health of the nation.  With the addition of Sjöström, this year’s edition of the festival is sure to sustain the momentum of previous events”.

The organisers, Professional Sports Group in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC), are continuing with free registration for all four Junior Splash Dash races to reinforce the vision behind inspiring and encouraging a new generation of youth participation in swimming, in line with both the ActiveLife initiative but also ADSC’s bid to increase fitness across the community.
